Rainy Day Wedding Tips and a Real Wedding

WELL HELLO SUNSHINE! Until yesterday, you hadn’t made much of an appearance lately.

It’s been such a dreary month outside for the Midwest, and this Fall we became particularly fond of the gray skies. Every weekend’s wedding it felt like had a thick mist, constant wet fog, or rain. This particular week in October, it was getting closer to Saturday and the rain wasn’t going anywhere. We wanted more than anything for Chelsee and Ryan to have their wedding story told accurately but to also have fun on their wedding day, rain or not. Throughout the course of the year prior, we’d learned so much about the two of them but if there’s one thing we really knew, it’s that Chelsee and Ryan like to have some freaking fun!

Well truth be told… their wedding was fun. Their reception was A BALL and the dance floor was full all night long. They also, you guessed it, had the most rain of the entire month. We battled thunderstorms and took refuge under overhangs to hide from the treacherous downpour. When the rain would calm down into a fine sprinkle, we’d rush outside to play in the rain – time and time again.

You guys! It was so much fun.

Let us backtrack. Obviously like any bride on her wedding day, Chels was staring at the Weather Channel app. This is a go-to move for the 15 days leading up to the big day for any bride let alone one with rain in the forecast. (That just means they check every hour.) Who better to tell you about all of the weather-drama-stress than the bride, herself?

“When I saw the forecast I kept checking every other hour to see if maybe it changed and there wasn’t any rain. I was bummed but I knew Mother Nature would do what she was going to and luckily I had awesome photographers to ease my worries and I knew whatever came of it would be beautiful!

After the ceremony, I kind of lost my “give a damn” and wanted to just go with it and live a little! I’m a big planner and always like to go by my plans, but today was our special day and wanted to just have fun! If it would have been raining after our grand entrance was over, we definitely would have been out in the downpour getting more pictures!!”

If you’re reading this because it’s forecasted to rain on your wedding day, here are a few tips for you.

  1. Remind  yourself what’s most important to you about this day. Yes your wedding is taking a different path than you’d planned for BUT you’re still marrying the love of your life and really that’s what it’s all about. Also in this case, Chelsee prioritized the party afterwards so keeping a mental note on what’s actually important to you – like that you’re still going to have a blast – is key to not over-stressing.
  2. Go to Target, pick up some clear umbrellas (at least one for every couple) or get some from Amazon here. Keep the tags on just in case the rain stays at bay and you can return those suckers.
  3. Get some rainboots, go barefoot or like Chelsee, rock some sandals. Better safe than sorry if you want some cute bridal-ish ones like this.
  4. GET A PHOTO IN THE RAIN! You’ll be so glad you did, we promise.
  5. Get excited. The opportunity you have to REALLY show what your wedding day was like has arrived. No, it’s not how you envisioned it throughout planning but let’s be real… life is crazy and unexpected. Rainy days have quickly became our FAVORITE wedding days (especially when there is a badass wedding party and an even better bride and groom!)

We tell our couple’s time and time again… if it rains… let it rain. Don’t be mad at it. Embrace it and let’s run in it together. If our couple’s listen – which almost all of them trust us and follow our lead, THIS perfection is what happens.

Enjoy, our rainy-day brides. 😉
